September 14 - 15, 2016 the NATSO Foundation is taking truckstop operators to Lexington, Va. to tour best-in-class truckstops during NATSO's Domestic Study Tour. Study Tour attendees will tour Fairfield BP in Fairfield, Virginia along with White's Travel Center and Lee Hi Travel Plaza. Since Bobby Berkstresser bought the location, the c-store's inside store sales have increased over 100% and fuel sales are up 30%. More

Study Tour attendees will tour Lee Hi Travel Plaza in Lexington, Virginia along with Fairfield BP and White's Travel Center. Established in 1959, Lee Hi Travel Plaza is owned by Bobby Berkstresser. Lee Hi Travel Plaza was featured on the Travel Channel's Show Food Paradise or Truck Stop Paradise, as the show was temporarily renamed for the episode. More

NATSO Opposes Various Efforts to Commercialize Roadways

Four years ago, the US Senate voted overwhelmingly to reject a proposal to commercialize highway rest areas. This 86-12 lopsided victory was a bipartisan show of support for truckstops, travel centers, and other private enterprises located outside the public right of way. However, this big win did not kill the lure of commercialization. Indeed, although there is little threat of a complete repeal of the long-standing ban on commercializing rest areas, there are sporadic efforts throughout the country to gradually peel back the ban, as politicians seeking road money lured by false promises of quick-and-easy revenue. Transportation Leaders Announce Highway Safety Initiative: Park My Truck

NATSO President and CEO Lisa Mullings joined representatives of the American Trucking Associations and the American Transportation Research Institute and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in urging truck parking providers to participate in a new highway safety initiative aimed at helping commercial truck drivers find available truck parking. Speaking at a press conference held May 18 on Capitol Hill during NATSO’s annual call on Washington, Mullings announced that beginning in late summer, truck drivers who need to stop and rest will be able to use a new, free mobile phone app called Park My Truck to locate available truck parking. More

NATSO Kicks Off Annual Day on the Hill

The truckstop and travel plaza industry will storm Capitol Hill May 18 to push for sustainable highway funding as well as to voice concerns with several labor initiatives being pushed by the Obama Administration as part of its annual Day on Capitol Hill. The industry also will tackle payments security amid the switch to EMV technology for Chip cards and its resulting shift in liability fraud onto retailers. More
