Virginia Residents Continue to Oppose Tolls on I-95

Virginia residents are continuing to voice their opposition to tolls on I-95, speaking out at public hearings, signing petitions and taking legal action. At least eight cities and towns have hired an attorney in their fight against the proposal, which they said would be a detrimental economic project. Despite opposition from local governments and citizens, Gov. Bob McDonnell continues to pursue his tolling plan, which would place a toll on Interstate 95 south of Richmond. The Virginia legislature begins its next session this week, so lawmakers and citizens will need to keep up the fight in state's general assembly. More

Government Issues Proposed Rule on Healthcare Law's Employer Mandate

Less than one year remains before most businesses will be required to offer health benefits to their workers as part of President Obama's healthcare law, and the Department of Treasury and IRS have moved forward on implementing the law's employer mandate provision, publishing a 144-page proposed regulation that outlines employers' responsibilities and coverage requirements. The regulation details requirements for full-time, part-time and seasonal workers along with how the employer mandate penalty is calculated. More

Freight Expected to Grow Slowly in 2013

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said he expects truck tonnage to grow at a slower pace in 2013 than it did in 2012, adding that a stronger economic recovery could boost the industry in 2014 and 2015. Costello, who is a featured speaker at The NATSO Show, predicted a two percent increase in for-hire truck tonnage this year, slowing from the 2.7 percent increase he projected for 2012. Costello said tonnage growth had been slowing throughout 2012. Tonnage in October dropped 3.8 percent and marked the first year-over-year decrease since November 2009. In November, however, tonnage increased 3.7 percent, marking the first gain since July. More
