Successful Coaching Improves Employee Development and Performance
For this week’s Darren’s Great Ideas for Independent Operators, let’s talk about coaching.
Coaching is part of the corrective action process, which I’ve written about in the past. However if done correctly, coaching can lead to many less negative corrective action situations. Successful coaching should improve an employee’s:
- Development; and
Both of these purposes should be done so that the team member, the manger/leader and the company benefit from the time and effort involved in the process.
I personally always enjoy when a team member is aware of what needs to improve and works gainfully to fix the behavior or situation, mostly because you have been coaching them along the way, and they are not shocked when their undesired behavior results in further corrective actions.
According to ToolingU, the definition of coaching is “The ongoing process of helping an employee to identify and overcome the hurdles that prevent him or her from excelling at the job."
Coaching should be taking place when:
- Preparing an existing and/or new team member for new responsibilities
- Providing performance feedback, both good and opportunities for improvement
- Setting goals
- Assigning daily activities
- Monitoring progress
- Motivating team members
- Building teams
- Building relationships within the organization and outside of it
- Resolving personal issues that are impacting operational performance
- Developing individuals including succession planning
- Accelerating/enhancing learning
Coaching is not demanding what team members should be doing, but rather leading them and helping them discover answers and solutions on their own. Coaching empowers team members to reach their full potential. Coaches do not play the games, players do. But without coaches, players would never learn how to play the game. Now GO COACH and tell me in the comments how it went!
