Companies Investing in Natural Gas Infrastructure, Technology

New infrastructure and manufacturing technologies are combining to spur the development of natural gas as an option for fueling the trucking industry, relieving anxiety about the range of trucks running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

NATSO member Clean Energy Fuels is collaborating with GE to expand the infrastructure for natural gas transportation in the United States. As part of the project, Clean Energy will buy two MicroLNG plants from GE Oil & Gas. Each plant will support fueling stations along critical transportation corridors and has the capacity to produce 250,000 gallons of LNG per day.

In an effort to make natural gas a more viable option for heavy-duty trucking, a number of companies, including Shell Oil are working develop gas-to-liquid technology that would produce a liquid fuel using natural gas as its feedstock. 

Peake Fuel Solutions, an affiliate of Chesapeake Energy Corp., has developed what it is calling diesel natural gas, a system installed on a truck's engine that allows heavy-duty trucks to run on a blend of diesel fuel and up to 70 percent natural gas or on diesel alone. The ability to switch between the dual fuel or diesel helps to eliminate the range anxiety many fleets have had with natural gas. Other companies, including American Power Group andEcoDual have similar technology on the market.
