House Passes Oil Exports Bill
October 9, 2015
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 261-159 Oct. 9 to end the four-decade-old limits on exporting domestic crude oil.
Just 26 Democrats voted in favor of the bill, which was sponsored by Texas Republicn Joe Barton.
American Petroleum Institute President Jack Gerard cheered the move, saying, "Today’s vote starts us down the path to a new era of energy security, saving consumers billions and creating jobs across the country."
The bill now goes to the Senate, where it faces an uphill battle and Democratic opposition. The measure did not get enough support to overturn a Presidential veto. The White House has threatened to veto the legislation.
