NATSO Vice President, Public Affairs, Tiffany Wlazlowski Neuman called attention to the challenges that truckstops and travel plazas face as they abide by varying health and social distancing orders being issued by local jurisdictions. In an article published in the New York Times, Wlazlowski Neuman highlighted the difficulties that truckstop and travel plaza employees face when they are asked to play the role of enforcement and police customers who may not always follow local orders. NATSO also underscored that truckstops and travel plazas remain open and are working hard to serve drivers and keep them on the road despite these challenges.

Citing a specific example, Wlazlowski Neuman told the New York Times that a general manager at a truck stop in Texas was threatened with arrest if he served a customer without a face mask. The local city council had issued an order requiring local residents to wear masks or face a fine of $1,000.

“Employees are working round the clock to keep their locations clean and truck drivers on the road,” Wlazlowski Neuman said. “Now they are being asked to police their customers.”

The truckstop and travel center industry is taking every precaution to protect the health and safety of its employees and customers. But varying interpretations of the Centers for Disease Control’s guidelines by state and local governments are impeding the truckstop industry’s ability to efficiently serve drivers delivering critical relief.
