NATSO‘s government affairs team is orchestrating congressional visits across the country to put truckstop and travel plaza members in direct contact with congressional leaders. These visits allow Members of Congress to hear and experience first-hand the challenges and issues facing the truckstop and travel plaza industry today.
The inaugural visit took place on Feb. 5 when Congressman Frank Lucas, former Chairman of the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Agriculture, visited the new Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores' location in Guthrie, Okla., which is situated in the Congressman's congressional district. This new facility added about 50 jobs to Logan County and boasts 10,000 square feet with 106 truck-parking spaces and seven showers.
Congressman Lucas toured the Love's location and was briefed by the Love’s leadership team on a host of important issues, including impending federal regulations that will directly impact retailers.
Among the issues discussed were USDA regulations related to the SNAP program that will require greater quantities of certain food items to be stocked; menu-labeling requirements for prepared food items that are sold in stores; and labor and workforce rules that are changing the meaning and definition of overtime pay and the joint employer standard.
While touring the outside grounds near the fuel lanes, the Love's team discussed the need to extend the biodiesel tax credit and keep the credit at the blender level. Converting the credit to a subsidy for biodiesel production, would result in increased fuel prices in all regions of the country, harming fuel retailers and their customers.
"Part of my job as a member of Congress representing all 32 counties of the 3rd Congressional District is to see what's going on, to see how we can help and encourage those things. From a federal perspective, when there are things that make business more difficult, we want to try and do something about that -- but this is just a very pleasant, positive stop that shows great progress in the Guthrie community, and I like seeing my neighbors at work," Lucas told the Guthrie News Page.
