As 2014 gets underway, close to 40,000 state laws passed in 2013 are going into effect, the National Conference of State Legislatures reported. Legislation taking effect includes measures on everything from minimum wage to human trafficking

The minimum wage will increase in 13 states in 2014, making for a total of 21 states with a minimum wage that exceeds the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.   The U.S. Senate may consider raising the federal minimum wage later this month.

States also passed a number of transportation initiatives in 2013. In fact, on Election Day, U.S. voters approved 91 percent of ballot measures to increase or extend funding for highways, bridges and transit. Several of the initiatives took effect on Jan. 1. In Pennsylvania, gas prices, permit fees and speeding fines have all increased to fund the state’s multi-billion dollar transportation plan.
