For two and a half days, the industry gathers to find knowledge, solutions and connections at The NATSO Show. Just like The NATSO Show, The NATSO Show Magazine is your source for improving your travel plaza business operations. Unlike The NATSO Show it is year-round.

Another Round of Great Ideas from The NATSO Show

Great ideas make things better, and operators attending the Great Ideas! for Independent Operators Workshop at The NATSO Show 2016 walked away from the annual session with dozens of ideas they could take back to their locations. A great idea can stand on its own, or you can add to it and find ways to make it your own.

Operators have already shared their top ideas here and here, and here are 10 more.

  1. As a way to promote your food, keep your bathroom clean. If your bathroom isn’t clean, customers will think your kitchen isn’t clean.
  2. Create a daily sales bonus plan for cashiers to help boost retention.
  3. When remodeling, place electrical outlets in the floor to have the ability to do different things with the space at different times.
  4. Pay attention to where vendors want to display their products. That tells you that is a good spot.
  5. If you charge for parking in an unsecured lot, create a permit drivers can display in the windshield.
  6. Replace coffee every hour, even if you are throwing it away, to make sure it is fresh.
  7. Use a third-party provider to manage a loyalty program so drivers can manage it online or use an app.
  8. Offer incentives to associates if they stay 90 days to six months. ”It costs $2,100 to recruit an employee if they leave in 90 days,” one operator said.
  9. Add a recruiting section to your website so potential employees know exactly what they are going to get in a position as well as which positions are open.
  10. Text out employees’ schedules in addition to posting them within the location.
