Five Trends in Beverages for Travel Centers to Watch

/

Beverage offerings inside of truck stops and travel plazas can be a powerful driver of sales, bringing customers inside and often prompting additional purchases of snacks or foodservice items.

“Beverage is a huge growth category,” said Kimberly Norton, manager of food product management at Wawa.

  1. Increased SKUs.
Energy drinks now represent 30–35% of cold vault sales, while protein drinks, functional waters and ready-to-drink options are rapidly claiming shelf space.
  2. Protein and Value-Added Dairy Surge.
Protein shakes and high-protein dairy products are among the fastest-growing beverage categories, driven by health and active-lifestyle trends.
  3. Fountain Innovation and Regional Flavor.
Dirty sodas, flavored lemonades, energy-infused drinks and regional favorites, such as sweet tea in the South, are elevating fountain offerings.
  4. Specialty Coffee Growth.
46% of American adults now consume specialty coffee daily, with espresso-based drinks and cold brew leading growth and younger customers driving the shift.
  5. Beverages as a Food Sales Driver.
Bundled meal-and-beverage deals at kiosks, fuel pump screens and hot cases increase average ticket size and reduce food waste.
