NATSO Supports Safer Roads for Those Who Serve Act
NATSO on Sept. 11, 2026, urged the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to include S. 4245, the “Safer Roads for Those Who Serve Act of 2026” in surface transportation legislation.
Of importance to NATSO members, S. 4245, introduced by Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Dave McCormick (R-Penna.), would:
- Strengthen public awareness of Move Over laws;
2. Improve the collection and reporting of highway worker crash data;
3. Require states experiencing increases in worker injuries and fatalities to include strategies for addressing those trends in their Strategic Highway Safety Plans.
Specifically, the bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to update the public awareness materials of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration within two years of enactment to more fully reflect the types of vehicles and drivers supported by State “Move Over laws.” Vehicles include tow truck operators, drivers of disabled vehicles, law enforcement, emergency responder services, fire and rescue services, construction workers, drivers of utility, waste, and recycling collection vehicles, at incidents along roadways.
Within 180 days of updating these public awareness materials, NHTSA also would be required to carry out a public service announcement.
