NATSO Foundation Releases Truck Stop and Travel Center Safety Guidance Toolkit
The NATSO Foundation released the Truck Stop and Travel Center Safety Guidance Toolkit, a comprehensive resource designed to help truck stop and travel center owners, managers and staff enhance their truck stop safety protocols to boost productivity and enhance employee and customer safety.
The NATSO Foundation’s Truck Stop and Travel Center Safety Guidance Toolkit is available for $250 at www.natso.com/safetytoolkit.
The toolkit draws on expertise from industry leaders at Pilot Company, Busy Bee, Suncor, Parker’s Kitchen, Coffee Cup Fuel Stops & Convenience Stores, Mitten Inc., the Truckload Carriers Association and more.
It covers eight key areas including:
- Safety training;
- Loss prevention;
- Cash handling;
- Roadside repairs;
- Parking lot security;
- Property maintenance;
- Fueling safety; and
- Cargo theft reduction.
The toolkit covers the operational aspects of safety, outlining best practices for employee training, personal protective equipment, overexertion prevention and de-escalation. It also covers surveillance technology, cash controls, fuel pump fraud prevention and parking lot design.
Among the toolkit’s key takeaways:
- Truck stops report that the majority of merchandise loss stems from employee theft. The toolkit outlines design, technology and audit strategies to reduce exposure.
- A NATSO Services survey found that 82 percent of professional drivers cite ample lighting as the No. 1 attribute they value in a travel center’s parking area, underscoring the connection between operational investments and driver loyalty.
- Roadside repair technicians face significant risks when servicing commercial vehicles near the Interstate Highway. The toolkit details federal visibility requirements, HAAS Alert’s technology and best practices for setting up a safe work zone.
The toolkit also makes the business case for investing in safety. According to OSHA, every $1 a company invests in safety and health translates to a $4 to $6 return in cost savings and productivity. Businesses that implement effective safety and health management systems may reduce injury and illness-related costs by 20 percent to 40 percent.
