10-21-2016 by Darren Schulte Truckstops Travels: Eddie’s Travel Center Uses Promotions to Boost Sales and Engage Customers

Eddie’s Travel Center in Mascoutah, Illinois, has taken promotions to a new level. They do a phenomenal job of promoting products through their day-to-day marketing and also take advantage of seasonal opportunities. Even better, they’re focused on marketing the same message throughout the location. They start their promotions on the outside of the location and carry it through to the inside.

10-07-2016 by Darren Schulte Truckstop Travels: Seeing Service in Action During the Louisiana Floods

The prolonged rainfall and resulting flooding in Louisiana in August was absolutely devastating. During a recent visit there in August, I saw so many truckstop and travel plaza operators doing everything they could to remain open during the disaster to serve their customers. We also talked with members who had to close due to the floods but were hard at work in hopes of re-opening as soon as possible. Our industry keeps people and products moving, and that can be even more important as people are leaving devastated areas or working to bring in relief supplies.

09-30-2016 by Darren Schulte Truckstop Travels: Clearwater Petro Speaks to All the Senses

Wendy Johnson, vice president of operations for Clearwater Travel Plaza, and her team operate one fantastic travel center! The independent Petro franchise location, which is located northwest of Minneapolis and is owned by Joel Nelson, is filled with the traditional travel center amenities and products. Even better, this location also indulges all the senses. Your ears, your eyes and your sense of smell are treated to a smorgasbord of delights. My favorites are the hand-crafted sandwiches, the amazingly tasty homemade breads of many fanciful flavors and the exceptional bakery products.

The Berkstresser’s recently completed their second remodel of White’s Travel Center and this one is somehow more impressive than the first. Under the Berkstresser’s direction, White’s evolved into a true family establishment and a home away from home for many. The latest incarnation, White’s 2.0 as I call it, not only strengthens that sense of home, but also provides the opportunity to bring a little bit of your travels home thanks to some retail innovation, which I was fortunate enough to witness at their Grand Opening celebration for their expansion — aptly named Destination Station.

11-18-2014 by Darren Schulte How Sapp Bros. is Excelling in Customer Service

During our travels to independent operators, Lisa Mullings, NATSO’s CEO, and I were fortunate to spend a couple of quality days with Sapp Bros. If we are noticing a trend in most of the locations we visit, including those travel center locations in Chile where NATSO travel center members enjoyed firsthand insight into COPEC’s operational excellence, rest rooms are king, and Sapp Bros. does not disappoint, specifically in Nebraska City.

11-06-2014 by Darren Schulte Focus on the Warm Winter Feeling, Not Just the Products

It was great to see operators like Stamart #5 preparing for the winter that will soon be upon us. The location had all the warm-you-up products for you and your truck, such as blankets, gloves, Howe’s, Power Service, ice alert thermometers, heaters, windshield wash and the like.

11-04-2014 by Darren Schulte Operational Lessons from Chile: Elevating the Ordinary to Extraordinary

NATSO Chairman Tom Heinz is fond of saying, “It is the ordinary things done extraordinarily well.” If you were to use any phrase to describe COPEC, a Chilean energy company with a chain of fueling stations throughout Chile, that is it. During our most recent international study tour, we were treated to an amazing inside look at the premier fuel, food and retail operator in Chile, and I am not be exaggerating when I say it is one of the best in the world. NATSO and NATSO members had an awareness that topped anything that most of us have experienced recently.
