At its interim meeting last week, the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) decided to schedule a vote on a proposal to mandate a 10 micron filter for diesel dispensers that serve automobiles. NCWM will consider the issue again at its annual meeting in July 2015, despite it being voted down at its previous meeting in July 2014. Currently the standard is a 30 micron filter for diesel fuel dispensers on the automotive service island.
The automotive industry and major oil companies are calling for the item to help protect new more sophisticated diesel engines. The autos think the proposal is needed to help protect the high-compression common rail injectors in the diesel engines and help protect against premature fuel pump filter clogging.
NATSO has worked with other industry trade groups to urge NCWM to reject the diesel dispenser filter proposal. Diminished dispenser flow rates, clogging and other additional operational costs were some of the reasons for opposition.
In addition, ASTM is working on new diesel cleanliness standards. NATSO thinks discussions on changing fuel filtration at the dispenser are premature until those new standards are developed.
