The truckstop and travel plaza industry kicked off its annual Day on Capitol Hill event May 15 to push for sustainable highway funding as well as to voice concerns for efforts to repeal debit swipe fee reform.
Nearly 60 NATSO members are scheduled to meet with their elected officials on Wed. May 17 to urge them to find permanent, sustainable solutions to the Highway Trust Fund such as increasing the motor fuels tax. They also will ask lawmakers to oppose any efforts that would weaken the federal prohibitions on rest area commercialization or the tolling of existing interstates.
The push comes as the Trump Administration is drafting its blueprint for a $1 trillion infrastructure package that it has said will focus on public-private partnerships for funding. Such revenue schemes could lead to tolling or commercial rest areas, which NATSO opposes, as private entities seek a fast return on their investment.
In addition to these transportation issues, NATSO members will meet with elected officials from both sides of the aisle to voice concerns about the upcoming House vote on the Financial CHOICE Act, which contains a provision that would repeal the debit swipe fee reforms implemented under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear is scheduled to address NATSO members May 16 to discuss the trucking industry’s outlook for the Trump Administration’s infrastructure plan, tolling initiatives in the United States, autonomous vehicles and the future of trucking.
Wednesday evening, NATSO will host its annual Capitol Hill pie reception, serving nearly 250 pies to legislators and their staff.
