Nearly half of commercial vehicle drivers would refuse to pay for reserved parking, according to a new survey issued by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). The survey, titled “Commercial Driver Perspectives on Truck Parking,” revealed that a disconnect exists between drivers’ interest in parking reservation systems and their willingness to pay for parking reservations. The survey also revealed that reservation parking systems near large metropolitan areas would have the highest utility.

05-13-2013 by NATSO MoDOT Converts Rest Areas to Truck Parking Only Facilities

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced last week that it will convert two rest areas at Halltown on Interstate 44 into truck-parking only facilities rather than spend funds to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) upgrades to the water and sewer systems. The rest areas currently offer parking for 37 trucks, which MoDot said it plans to expand.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, recently announced that it is working with several groups to develop a national truck parking reservation system that allows drivers and fleets to check on parking availability along an interstate corridor in real time using wireless devices.
