As Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) signed the state’s landmark transportation legislation which imposes new wholesale sales taxes on gas and diesel, the governor’s press secretary said the state would withdraw the application to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to toll Interstate 95.

Maryland lawmakers gave final approval Friday to the first increase in the state’s gas tax in 20 years. Under the bill, which passed the Senate 27 to 20, motorists can expect to pay between 13 and 20 cents more per gallon by mid-2016.

With fuel economy of cars and trucks increasing and more hybrids hitting the road, officials are taking a look at the fuel tax over the long haul, in recognition that the current ways of paying for infrastructure aren’t generated enough revenue.

Virginia State Sen. John Watkins rolled out his new transportation funding plan that will raise the gas tax, lower the income tax, and eliminate tax credits and exemptions. The plan includes a 14-cent per gallon fuel tax increase that Watkins said would raise about $734 million and avoid tolls proposed by Gov. Bob McDonnell to pay for road construction. Watkins said he will propose the legislation in January.
