01-17-2014 by NATSO South Carolina Legislation Proposes Tolls on I-95

Lawmakers in South Carolina have introduced legislation calling for tolls on a portion of Interstate 95 in the state. Sen. Bradley Hutto and Sen. Kevin Johnson introduced the bill, which would implement a toll along I-95 where it crosses Lake Marion in either Orangeburge or Clarendon County. Hutto said that because Interstate 95 is a federal highway, all money collected through the toll would go toward repairs and improvements on Interstate 95 only.

Members of Congress met this week to discuss the future of highway funding, and House Transportation Committee Chairman Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) said he wants the House to pass a new transportation funding bill by August to allow time for conference negotiations with the Senate. The current highway bill expires Sept. 30.
