The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently awarded a corporate sponsorship contract for the state's 42 rest areas and welcome centers to CRH Catering of Connellsville, Pa. CRH Catering reportedly will pay the commonwealth $2 million a year for sponsorship rights.

Insurance company GEICO also has signed on to sponsor “safe phone zones” at the rest areas to encourage drivers to refrain from using their phones while driving. GEICO plans to erect highway signs to direct motorists to the safe phone zones.
