The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the lastest group to call for an increase in the fuel tax. In testimony last week before a House Budget Committee, the chamber said that the federal gas tax needs to rise about 30 cents per gallon to avoid insolvency of the Highway Trust Fund. Meanwhile, some 17 states are considering or have approved increased gas taxes to pay for infrastructure. Vermont marked the latest state to raise gas and diesel taxes, voting to increase gas taxes by 5.9 cents in May and diesel taxes by 2 cents in July. The diesel tax is scheduled to go up another penny next year.
But despite the overwhelming need for more infrastructure revenues, some U.S. citizens remain hesitant about the need to raise fuel tax revenues, according to a survey.
