July marks the six-month anniversary since the NATSO Foundation launched its online training course designed to help the travel plaza and truckstop community identify and respond to suspected cases of human trafficking.
In just a few short months, the industry has made significant strides in implementing this important training tool titled, “The Role of Truckstops in Combating Human Trafficking.”
Since unveiling the course at The NATSO Show, the industry has pledged to train more than 31,000 employees. And that number continues to grow each week.
Sadly, human trafficking has been reported across all modes of transportation and in many legitimate businesses that unknowingly are used for this illicit activity.
The travel plaza and truckstop industry in 2012 took a united stand with other members of the transportation community to stop the flow of human trafficking using America’s transportation system.
Each pledge and each trained employee reaffirms that commitment.
Our industry takes seriously the fight against human trafficking, and we’re taking meaningful action to ensure that we are prepared to respond.
With the help of the NATSO Foundation’s training tools, the industry is effectively creating the equivalent of a Neighborhood Watch program.
Because the typical travel plaza or truckstop is so close to the Interstate Highway System, our industry has an important role to play in helping victims of human trafficking, who are often moved across state lines.
As an industry that caters to millions of travelers every year, truckstops and travel plazas and their employees are in a key position to help identify and stop suspected cases of human trafficking along America’s highway system.
Our goal is to provide America’s travel plazas and truckstops with the tools they need to train their staff so that employees are equipped to help if they encounter a victim of this horrible crime.
To be sure, we still have thousands more to train.
But we’re making great headway. We are committed to pushing forward until every employee in our industry has the tools necessary to fight this horrendous crime.
