The Obama Administration rejected a bid to expand the Keystone oil sands pipeline, saying the deadline imposed by Congress did not leave sufficient time to conduct the necessary review. The announcement drew fierce criticism from the projects proponents, including U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The State Department has said that the denial does not preclude TransCanada from re-applying for the permit to build the 1,700-mile underground pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast. The pipeline is predicted to create thousands of U.S. jobs, including positions in construction and in manufacturing.
