New York State Sen. David Carlucci (D) has introduced legislation that would require fuel retailers in New York State to have electric generators on site, ensuring they are able to operate all fuel pumps, dispensing equipment, life safety systems and payment acceptance equipment in the event of a power outage.
The legislation would apply to fuel retailers located within one-half mile to an interstate highway or state/federally designated evacuation route. The legislation also would require terminal facilities and wholesalers have generator source power available no later than 24 hours after a major disaster and to be able to operate loading racks using the generator for a minimum of 72 hours.
