NATSO today expressed its deepest sympathies and condolences following the passing of its former President and Chief Executive Officer W. Dewey Clower. Clower passed away Oct. 31 after being hospitalized for a fall.

Clower served as NATSO’s President and Chief Executive Officer for 15 years, before retiring in 2002, and was named as NATSO's President Emeritus in 2003.

“The truckstop industry has lost a friend and devoted advocate with the passing of Dewey Clower,” said NATSO President and CEO Lisa Mullings. “In many respects, Dewey laid the foundation upon which we continue to build today. Although Dewey retired more than a decade ago, his work continues to serve the association’s members. He will be missed.”

Under Clower’s leadership, NATSO initiated the NATSO Government Affairs Conference in March 1998. In 1990, The NATSO Foundation, originally named The American Truck Stop Foundation, was launched to advance the research, education and public outreach efforts of the industry.

In speaking about his time working for the truckstop industry, Clower once said, “I am fortunate enough to experience on a daily basis that the travel plaza and truckstop industry is comprised of men and women possessing the most outstanding character, highest morals, deepest faith and strongest commitment to community and family that I have ever encountered in my professional career.”

Before joining NATSO, Clower served as the CEO of the Food Processing Machinery & Supplies Association and as Executive Vice President of the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute. Prior to his association career, he served as the Special Assistant to President Nixon and Deputy Assistant to Vice President Ford.

Clower had an electronic engineering degree from the University of Virginia and served as an officer of the United States Air Force.

Visitations are scheduled to be held Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Presbyterian Church, located at 11121 Leavells Rd., Fredericksburg, Va., 22407. A Memorial Service will be held Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at the same location, followed by a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall.

The family requests that donations be made in Dewey Clower’s name to either Hope Presbyterian Church or Young Life of Greater Fredericksburg in lieu of flowers.
