Michigan marks the latest state to consider taking advantage of a provision under the last highway bill that allows states to sell advertising and sponsorships at rest areas.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking sponsorships to help defray the costs of operating and maintaining 64 rest areas and 14 welcome centers.
MDOT on June 24 issued a request for proposals from vendors interested in providing a sponsorship and advertising program that could include services like Wi-Fi, litter pick up, landscaping/grounds and video displays. The program also will include a digital information system for travelers.
MDOT is seeking to award a five-year contract term with a selected vendor that would begin this fall. The agreement could be extended in one-year increments for up to five additional years.
A mandatory pre-bid meeting for prime vendors will be held on July 10, and electronic proposals are due Aug. 11.
