Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx urged lawmakers to pass a long-term measure to boost U.S. infrastructure spending Feb. 11 at a hearing kicking off House discussions of the highway bill.
Testifying at a hearing held by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Foxx said Congress has essentially been saying stop at a time when the United States should be building more.
Foxx also reiterated the Obama Administration’s push for its six-year, $478 billion proposal unveiled in the 2016 budget.
Although tolling was not discussed during the hearing, in a subsequent “Twitter Townhall” Foxx said tolling should be part of the mix of solutions for funding infrastructure.
Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa. ), who participated with Foxx, responded that while Congress is looking at all options to ensure the trust fund is fully funded he did not think there is a will in the U.S. to toll interstates.
