The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) called on Illinois transportation policymakers to incorporate congestion pricing into six major tollway projects, asserting that the program would permit faster travel times and capture $74 million annually in revenues for toll system maintenance and expenses. Under congestion pricing, separate express lanes would be constructed as part of the five highway projects. Motorists would be charged a premium to use these express lanes. Pricing also would be adjusted throughout the day on express and conventional lanes, with motorists paying higher premiums during periods of intense traffic.
