In 1963 Don and Bernice Alsaker took a chance and opened a fueling station on the newly constructed Interstate 90. Today, Broadway Flying J has grown from the original location on I-90 to seven travel plazas in Washington, Montana and Nevada. For the past 50 years, Broadway has served highway travelers, local residents and professional drivers and has always gone the extra mile. Much like the new highway that revolutionized interstate commerce, Broadway’s entrepreneurial mind-set and commitment to family values has lead them to many historic milestones, but none more important than the dedication to their employees.
“We empower our employees to do whatever necessary to help customers and provide service that exceeds their expectations. We call it ‘Going the Extra Mile,’ which has become our motto,” said Dan Alsaker, president of Broadway and son of founders Don and Bernice Alsaker.
From the beginning, Broadway placed a great importance on employee development. It’s mission, “we create the opportunity for ordinary people to do extraordinary things,” emphasizes the amount of trust Broadway places in its employees.
Alsaker has countless stories of employees who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. From employees who drive customers to dialysis treatments to those who have rescued stranded drivers during snowstorms, Broadway’s staff shows a level of caring that surpasses what is expected. “Our employees respond to being able to make a difference and we try to reward “extra-mile” service whenever possible, “ he said, adding that it’s the extra-mile service that makes Broadway feel like a home away from home for its customers.
In the day and age of automation, it is easy to enter a travel plaza and have little to no human interaction. From the employees at the fuel desk to the servers in the restaurant, Broadway’s staff takes a hands-on approach. It’s that commitment that has allowed the company to thrive. Not only has Broadway Flying J grown from the original truckstop on I-90 to seven travel plazas in three states, the company has also expanded its services to include seven restaurants and six casinos.
At Broadway, both management and staff strive to make the customer’s experience as personal as possible. Employing nearly 400 employees system wide, Broadway is proud that a number of employees have been with them for more than 30 years. By combining that long-term experience with the energy and ideas new employee bring to the table, the Broadway family number one in service.
