7 Tools to Help Find, Hire and Keep Travel Center Employees

In the current competitive labor environment, attracting and retaining talent has become paramount, and modern workforce solutions are helping business recruit, hire and onboard employees faster. There are also a range of tools employers can tap into to improve employees’ experiences, enhance culture and increase retention.

Members of NATSO’s HR Sharegroup shared seven tools designed to help companies improve their human resources processes and employee experience.

Swiftcheck
An employment background screening report is useful in conducting a comprehensive employment history check, and SwiftCheck has worked to speed turnaround times. One NATSO member reported getting complete background checks done in as little as two hours. It’s SwiftScreen software allows users to contact candidates via email and text messages, which the company said greatly  reduces report turnaround time. More than three-quarters of SwiftCheck’s clients use its background check texting technology.

SwiftCheck’s technology can validate previous employment history provided by the candidate and check for major issues, such as theft. The company also offers SwiftCheck Alert, a constant monitoring background check service that monitors employee records in real-time and notifies organizations of new criminal charges, infractions or license expiration.

Paylocity
Paylocity provides cloud-based payroll and human capital management software, and during NATSO’s Human Resources Share Group, one member reported using it for applicant tracking.

Paylocity also offers onboarding solutions designed to streamline the onboarding paperwork process so managers can spend more time creating an engaging first day and getting to know their new hires. Studies show that new hires who have a positive experience are more likely to contribute to business goals and remain with their new employer longer, Paylocity reported.

Paylocity’s Modern Workforce Index uses AI to provide insight into employee sentiment, performance metrics and engagement. MWI helps employers identify gaps and solutions for increasing employee productivity and reducing turnover.

TalentReef
Employers can access a range of digital tools to help manage pre-employment, scheduling and payment processes through TalentReef, a talent management platform built for the hourly workforce. TalentReef’s reporting tools track and provide details on everything from applicants who have expressed interest to onboarding forms and background check information. It’s analytics also provide data on time-to-hire, turn-over, campaign results, enabling continuous improvement of users’ talent management strategies.

TalentReef also offers several integrations. TalentReef partnered with 7shifts to simplify team management in the restaurant industry. New employee information is sent from the TalentReef platform to 7shifts in near real-time, allowing users to schedule new employees within minutes. The drag-and-drop scheduler allows managers to quickly create and assign shifts in 80% of the time as other methods. Schedule views can be customized and templated to make it even easier to factor in availability, time-off, over-time and labor compliance.

TalentReef recently partnered with Immediate, an on-demand pay solution for earned-wage access outside of a traditional pay cycle. Getting paid before their scheduled payday can help alleviate the employees’ stress of unexpected bills or difficult financial situations. According to TalentReef, the benefit can be an attractive perk for attracting and retaining employees, and employers who offer Immediate have seen up to 40% reduction in turnover.

Pardox
Paradox’s AI tool Olivia automates more than 90% of the hiring process and uses people’s phones. The company said Olivia can help employers hire hourly workers in days, and McDonald’s reduced its time to hire by 60%. On average, less than 20% of candidates complete the application process, Pardox said. With Olivia, more than 50% do, and 99% report that it’s a positive experience. Employers can use QR codes and a text-to-apply keyword to start conversations with potential candidates.

Interview Warmup
Google’s Interview Warmup is targeted at job seekers looking to practice and improve their interview skills, but it can be helpful for hiring managers as well by providing sample interview questions. Coming up with interview questions can be harder than it looks, and Google has created questions on various subjects hiring managers may want to add to their interview process.

Lyra Health
During NATSO’s HR Sharegroup meeting, members reported that Lyra Health can be a useful EAP benefit for workers. Lyra Health providers mental health benefits for more than 2.5 million global employees and dependents. It creates a frictionless experience using matching technology and an innovative digital platform to connect companies and their employees and their dependents to therapists, mental health coaches and personalized medication prescribing.

FCCLA
The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in public and private school through grade 6–12, and it can be a helpful resource for finding new employees. FCCLA supports career pathways in several fields, including hospitality.
