Natural Gas Fuels

Many NATSO members have invested in natural gas, whether compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).  There are a variety of policy issues associated with natural gas on which NATSO advocates.  For example, in recent years, there was a $.50/gallon tax credit applicable to sales of CNG and LNG (among other fuels).  This tax credit expired at the end of 2016.  NATSO supports its extension.

Additionally, Congress late in 2015 passed legislation that includes a weight exemption that allows heavy duty-duty natural gas vehicles to exceed the federal weight limits up to 82,000 lbs. to compensate for the additional weight of natural gas fuel systems and tanks.  Also in 2015, Congress passed legislation requiring that LNG be taxed on a diesel gallon equivalent basis, putting it on an equal footing with diesel fuel in terms of energy content.  (CNG is taxed on a gasoline gallon equivalent basis.)

Relatedly, NATSO works closely with other retail fuels groups and the natural gas industry to support a uniform national standard for dispensing CNG and LNG in diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) units.  In 2016, the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) adopted a proposal supported by NATSO  that will allow fuel marketers to advertise and sell Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in diesel gallon equivalents.
