Representatives Michael Michaud (D-Maine) and Reid Ribble (R-Wisc.) recently introduced H.R. 612 the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act of 2013, which would allow longer and heavier trucks on the National Highway System.
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) already have voiced their respective support and opposition to the measure, which has been referred to the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit.
Congress rejected longer-heavier trucks in the current highway bill MAP-21, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, which became law in July 2012. The U.S. Department of Transportation was asked to study the effects of longer and heavier trucks on the nation’s infrastructure, highway safety, efficiency and the economy.
