A number of states are launching new measures to fight human trafficking, which victimizes between 100,000 and 300,000 people each year.
In Ohio, two training programs through the Ohio Highway Patrol are training officers, truck drivers and residents on how to spot and report suspected human trafficking crimes on state highways, said Anne Ralston, spokeswoman for the patrol.
In Nevada, a new fund created by the General Assembly is creating a vehicle for the state to accept donations to fight human trafficking, and a Michigan State House Committee has passed legislation to decrease human trafficking and to provide a safe harbor for victims.
NATSO and the trucking industry are among several groups within transportation, including Amtrak and the airlines, are participating in a Department of Transportation stakeholder group working to put an end to human trafficking. During The NATSO Show, human trafficking survivor Shamere McKenzie will share her story during a breakfast keynote address.
