House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R.-Pa.) said Congress will get a long-term highway bill done this year but not before current highway funding expires at the end of May, according to published reports. Rep. Shuster also said that raising the gas tax to pay for a long-term bill would be impossible.
Rep. Shuster made the comments during a two-day tour of his home state of Pennsylvania to meet with industry stakeholders and discuss the future of transportation infrastructure.
Rep. Shuster kicked off the road trip April 7 with a press conference at the Greenfield Bridge in Pittsburgh.
In speaking about an increase to the federal gasoline tax, Rep. Shuster said, “I’m for what’s possible, not what’s impossible,” the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Rep. Shuster said that the idea of repatriation continues to gain popularity among lawmakers who have yet to find consensus on how to fund a transportation bill.
