As the House Energy and Commerce Committee reviews the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for the first time in five years, Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) has tasked four Republican panel members to take the lead on RFS reform.

Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., a senior member of the committee, will lead the unofficial team. Other panelists include Reps. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Lee Terry (R-Neb.) and Steve Scalise (R-La.).

The RFS is one of the biggest issues currently being discussed on Capitol Hill.

The industry is hitting what is known as the ethanol blend wall, which refers to the point at which adding the EPA-mandated volume of ethanol to gasoline supplies would result in ethanol blends that exceed 10 percent. The required volumes of ethanol as set by the RFS must now be added to a smaller-than-expected pool of gasoline, and many experts predict the 10 percent blend wall may be reached as soon as this year.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has said it plans to draft legislation in the next few months.
