As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers lowering some requirements of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), the Renewable Fuels Association is suggesting that adjusting the ethanol mandate could cost consumers up to $11 billion

EPA is expected to release its  renewable fuel standard mandates for 2014 soon. According to a draft report, EPA is considering requiring only 15.22 billion gallons of renewable fuels in 2014 instead of the 18.15 billion gallons required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. However, EPA said no decisions have been made.

The RFS continues to generate debate on Capitol Hill.  Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) are expected to introduce legislation that would remove the Renewable Fuel Standard mandate requiring the use of conventional ethanol. The bill, which has not yet been introduced, would leave RFS's advanced biofuel requirements intact.
