Coalition Urges Senators to Co-Sponsor 40 Hours Full-Time Act

NATSO joined a broad group of industry associations representing a cross-section of the U.S. economy in urging members of the U.S. Senate to co-sponsor legislation that would redefine full-time employment to 40 hours per week under the Affordable Care Act.

In a letter sent to the Senate Jan. 22, the More Time for Full-Time Coalition, of which NATSO is a member, urged Senators to co-sponsor S. 30, the Forty Hours is Full Time Act of 2015. 

“Aligning the law’s definition of full-time employee status with current levels would help avoid any unnecessary disruptions to employees’ wages and hours and would provide significant relief,” the coalition wrote.

Employees nationwide are losing wages and workable hours as the 30-hour definition forces employers to restructure their workforce and reduce employee hours to alleviate the burden of compliance.

Returning the definition of full-time to 40 hours per week would provide employees with more hours and additional income while helping employers to focus on growing their business and creating jobs.

The coalition said critical flexibility will be lost if employers are forced to abandon current practices to avoid significant financial penalties.

NATSO joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, International Franchise Association, National Council of Chain Restaurants, National Grocers Association, National Restaurant Association, National Retail Federation, the American Hotel & Lodging Association and the National Association of Convenience Stores among others in signing the letter.  

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 252-172 on Jan 8 in favor of legislation that would redefine the definition of full-time to 40 hours per week under the Affordable Care Act as well as waive fees on businesses that do not offer health insurance to employees working fewer than 40 hours.
