Restrooms are a key area to focus on when providing accessible facilities to your patrons. The requirements listed in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design are extensive. Today we begin a group of blog posts to help you navigate these restroom requirements.

Toilets mounted too far or too close to the adjacent wall are on the list of top Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance issues seen in truck stops and travel plazas.

According to section 604.2 of the ADA Standards, the toilet shall be positioned with a wall or partition to the rear and to one side. The centerline of the toilet shall be 16 inches minimum to 18 inches maximum from the side wall or partition, except that the toilet shall be 17 inches minimum and 19 inches maximum from the side wall or partition in the ambulatory accessible toilet compartment specified in section 604.8.2. Toilets shall be arranged for a left-hand or right-hand approach. Below is a diagram that details toilet location requirements.

Next month we’ll discuss the issue of grab bars at the water closet mounted in the wrong location vertically and horizontally. This will be the first of several posts regarding ADA compliance issues we see in restrooms at truck stops and travel plazas.
