NATSO Check-Link Driver 101: Why Write Checks?

During The NATSO Show, I had the pleasure of being interviewed on Red Eye Radio about one of my favorite subjects: NATSO Check-Link.

You can listen to the entire interview here.

This week on NATSO’s blog I’m also going to share on the three topics discussed.

First up, considering all of the payment options available to drivers today, why is it in their best interest to still write checks?

  • In the age of high credit card fees and fuel card fees, writing checks actually saves drivers money. Drivers pay very high processing fees to use credit cards or even fuel cards every time they fill their tank. In a lot of cases, those fees are hidden.

  • Writing a check is the equivalent of paying cash. The only fee the driver pays is an annual $30 check-link membership fee.

  • There is on average a six cent per gallon difference between paying cash and credit. We hear from drivers that by writing checks, they can save between $700 and $800 annually.

  • Think about it this way: If a driver pays six cents per gallon and he fills up with 100 gallons, he is saving $6. If he does that twice a week, he’s saved $12. That’s $48 dollars a month or $576 dollars a year.

  • In addition, he isn’t paying the credit card processing fee, which can be as high as 20 percent per purchase. On a $400 purchase, that is a savings of $80.

  • At the same time, we hear anecdotally from drivers that writing checks helps with cash flow. Drivers have a much better sense of the money going in and out because none of it is tied up in hidden fees.
