Here are four great ideas operators shared with their peers:

Investing in Grab-and-Go: Don Quinn of Sapp Bros., said the company’s locations are developing their grab-and-go and has added healthy items, such as hard-boiled eggs. The grab-and-go now accounts for about $30,000 a month in sales.

Improving Online Marketing: Chris Heinz of Coffee Cup Fuel Stops, is working with LocalVox to boost his online marketing presence. He is having schema codes put up on the website so the company shows up in certain places online. The company is also tracking online reviews from sites, such as Yelp.

Trying New Products: Brian Couch of Donna’s Travel Plaza said the company has been trying new products and has great luck selling chicken gizzards and now goes through 200 to 300 pounds a week.

Learning from Abroad: Tom Heinz of Coffee Cup Fuel Stops said that he has gotten several great ideas from checking out what his peers are doing abroad. During the most recent NATSO Study Tour in Chile, Heinz noticed that the locations abroad had more seating and had four different coffee offerings. They promoted their food heavily and on on-road signage, the food sign is on top—making it the most prominent—and the oil sign is on the bottom.
