Recently, the entire Renewable Fuels Standard has come under attack with growing concerns about the U.S. drought. Specifically, some livestock groups have called for a waiver for the ethanol requirement under the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2) based on corn crop production estimates.

It’s important to keep in mind that the biodiesel industry can weather the drought and provide solutions for truck stop operators with our multiple-feedstock approach. Truck stop operators are responsible for fueling America’s diesel-powered over-the-road industry and additional supply is available from the biodiesel industry. June biodiesel production was more than 115 million gallons with 587 million gallons produced toward the U.S. goal of 1.0 billion just half-way through the year.

Today’s biodiesel industry makes meat and meal production more economical by buying their by-products. Renewable Energy Group, for example, uses primarily animal fats, used cooking oil and inedible corn oil to produce high quality biodiesel. Demand for animal fats as a raw material source for biodiesel improves the value per head for livestock producers and may reduces pressures on rising prices for consumer meat and dairy products.

Amid cries for an RFS2 waiver, the EPA and USDA Secretary Vilsack continue to reassure Americans that agriculture can meet current and growing demands for biofuel consumption and grow the economy with Vilsack calling biodiesel “the resilient face of agriculture.”
