A new Senate amendment to the transportation legislation that will be voted on this week represents one of the biggest threats interstate businesses have ever faced. It is imperative that you act now and call or email your senators to request that they oppose Amendment 1742 to S. 1813. Even if you have spoken with your Senator in the past about this issue, please click here to act today and make sure he or she understands this imminent threat and is prepared to oppose Amendment 1742.
NATSO, along with members of the Partnership to Save Highway Communities, is working to educate Senators about the devastating effects this legislation would have for businesses serving motorists on the nation's highways. NATSO continues to fight a similar amendment to the House transportation legislation, Amendment 217 by Rep. Steven LaTourette. The outcome of this week's Senate vote will have significant influence on the survival of the initiative in the House of Representatives.
Similar to the House measure, the amendment filed last week by Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, would allow state departments of transportation to open commercial rest areas for the sale of food, fuel and convenience items on the interstate and on all highways -- with a major advantage of a location on the interstate right of way.
