The truckstop and travel plaza industry will storm Capitol Hill May 18 to push for sustainable highway funding as well as to voice concerns with several labor initiatives being pushed by the Obama Administration as part of its annual Day on Capitol Hill. The industry also will tackle payments security amid the switch to EMV technology for Chip cards and its resulting shift in liability fraud onto retailers.

Nearly 60 NATSO members are scheduled to meet with their elected officials to urge them to find permanent, sustainable solutions to the Highway Trust Fund as Congress works toward updating and reforming the U.S. tax code. They also will ask them to oppose any efforts that would weaken the federal prohibitions on rest area commercialization or the tolling of existing interstates.

In addition to these transportation issues, NATSO members will meet with elected officials from both sides of the aisle to:

  • voice concerns about the Department of Labor’s proposed overtime eligibility rule and the National Labor Relations Board’s definition of joint-employer;
  • ask Members of Congress to begin a comprehensive effort to examine the payments chains to make it more secure, including the adoption of PIN technology to help protect retailers and consumer.

NATSO members will attend a luncheon with guest speakers political consultants Brad Todd and JB Poersch. Tuesday evening, NATSO will host its annual Capitol Hill pie reception, serving nearly 250 pies to legislators and their staff.
