Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb on Nov. 30 abandoned plans to add tolls to Indiana’s existing interstates, saying that the state no longer needed tolling revenues because it had committed enough money for transportation infrastructure enhancements.

The administration was required to study tolling under a road-funding plan passed by the Indiana legislature in 2017. However, the idea of tolling was strongly opposed by residents and the  business community, including NATSO and and the trucking industry.

The Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates (ATFI), of which NATSO is a founding member, applauded the Governor’s decision not to move forward with tolls, saying, “We appreciate Gov. Holcomb deciding against tolling Indiana’s existing interstates to fund roads and other transportation projects. The evidence is clear: tolls are a bad deal for business owners, consumers and motorists throughout Indiana’s economy.”

The Indiana General Assembly in 2017 passed HB 1002 — a bill changing the regulations regarding tolling Indiana’s interstates.

When news first spread about HB 1002, ATFI and NATSO immediately mobilized in opposition. The groups launched www.NoTollsIndiana.com to organize Indiana residents and advocates against the tolling provisions in HB 1002.

Over the course of only a few weeks, NoTollsIndiana.com received 3,791 petition signatures from Hoosiers expressing opposition to HB 1002 bill, and was used to send more than 1,000 emails to the state legislature. After the legislation was passed, ATFI remained active in promoting its anti-toll message in the media.

ATFI was highlighted in The Journal Gazette and the Indianapolis Star, and worked with members on the ground in Indiana to give them the tools they needed to fight against the pro-tolling lobby.
