The Federal Trade Commission said that it will look into allegations by two midwestern lawmakers that oil companies may be impeding competition for renewable fuels.

The announcement came in response to a letter from Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) urging the Administration to address reports that oil companies may be violating federal antitrust law to prevent higher ethanol gasoline blends from coming to market.

Sens. Klobuchar and Grassley allege that the oil company requirements that retailers sell premium gasoline is blocking  the use of the current retail infrastructure to sell renewable fuels, according to their letter.  Earlier this year, the Renewable Fuels Association made similar charges, requesting investigations from the FTC, Justice Department, Energy Department and other agencies.
