South Carolina Grants Retailers Immunity From Consumer Misfueling

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley recently signed into law legislation that grants wholesale and retail petroleum marketers immunity from liability when a customer dispenses an incompatible fuel into their vehicle. South Carolina is one of the first states to implement such a law. To claim the immunity, the fuel must have been an approved fuel and the dispensers had to have been properly labeled. The immunity was also extended to include the major oil companies.
 
The South Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association (SCPMA) was instrumental in advocating this effort, which passed both the state House and the Senate without a single dissenting vote.
