A key Republican working on a plan to rewrite the international tax code, said he would oppose any efforts to use his plan to help finance a highway funding package, Politico reported.
Rep. Boustany, who is a member of the Ways and Means Committee, said international tax reform is not a real way to fix the chronically underfunded highway program and that tapping the international tax provisions defied the concept of a user fee for surface transportation.
Rep. Boustany’s statements came as a surprise as House Republicans previously have indicated that tax reform could be coupled with long-term highway bill.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) has said that repatriation of corporate earnings held overseas would help to fix the Highway Trust Fund provided it was part of overall corporate tax reform.
