In the latest issue of Stop Watch magazine, we shared the story of how Sacramento 49er stepped up to serve thousands of soldiers who were passing through the area. That made us curious about what other operators are doing to honor those who do and have served.

Seth Miller of Petro Travel Store #353 in Portage, Wisconsin, told us that staff at the location frequently sees soldiers pass through as there is an Army base, Fort McCoy, north of the location. Here are some of the things the location does to honor the troops:

“On Veteran's Day in particular Iron Skillets give a free meal to all veterans who present a military ID.  The stores and fuel islands give free stickers that say "Support Our Troops" with the Petro logo on it. From Memorial Day to Sept. 11 we decorate the store in a patriotic theme as a nod to our troops and the country they fight to protect. Perhaps the most important part that we do is whenever we see a soldier and especially on Veteran's Day, we sincerely thank them for their service. It doesn't cost any money, takes but a moment and has real impact on that individual.”

Does your location do something special to honor members of the military?
