Operators who attended the Great Ideas Session at The NATSO Show 2016 know the workshop was a flurry of activity. Independent truckstop and travel plaza operators joined together to inspire each other with their latest ideas. Dozens of ideas were flowing back and forth.

We have already shared 10 great ideas that came out of the conference. Now here are 10 more.

  1. Have a five-to-ten minute meetings between shifts for the managers to pass on what they know.

  2. Have managers of all the shifts interact with each other so when there is a bonus program they are all on the same team.

  3. Get involved with social media, such as Instagram and YouTube. You can use it for employment and recruiting.

  4. Customers are going bananas for bananas. “We’re finding that more often than not, stores are competing over sales of tons of bananas,” an operator said.

  5. Add drive-thrus for c-stores if you have enough local traffic to support it.

  6. Place a cellular set on a front end cap where all your customers can see it instead of chips. Not everyone wants chips, but everyone CRAVES their phones.

  7. Suggestive sell within the store based on what the customer comes to the counter with.

  8. Look at your customer traffic patterns. “Watch 100-200 people to see where they go. That is where you put your high-margin items,” one operator said.

  9. Add drive-thrus for c-stores if you have enough local traffic to support it.

  10. Place fresh fruit on an end cap to dramatically increase its sales.
