Virginia fuel retailers are reminded that effective Jan. 1, Virginia’s gas tax will increase 5.1 cents to 16.2 cents per gallon.

The state diesel tax remains unchanged at 20.2 cents per gallon.

The comprehensive transportation bill signed in 2013 by Gov. McDonnell mandated that the Virginia gasoline tax be calculated on a cents-per-gallon basis based upon the percentage of the wholesale price of gasoline on Feb. 20, 2013. The legislature also tied the state’s gas tax to Congressional passage of the Marketplace Equity Act (MEA), which would have granted Virginia the authority to force internet sellers to collect state and local taxes.

Because Congress failed to pass MEA, transportation funding calculations change to 5.1 percent from 3.5 percent on Jan. 1.

The new rate marks the first time in nearly 30 years that the state’s gas tax has risen, and will be in effect until June 30, 2015.
