Truckstop Merchandise Purchases Up 6%

The total merchandise purchases per week per travel plaza and truckstop were up 6% versus 2011 (excluding cigarettes) according to the 3rd Quarter 2012 McLane-NATSO Foundation Index. Cigarette purchases per week per travel plaza and truckstop were up 5% in the first nine months of 2012.

The McLane-NATSO Foundation Index is produced quarterly and offers NATSO members the opportunity to compare their weekly convenience store purchases with travel plazas and truckstops convenience stores served by McLane. 

The McLane-NATSO Foundation Index is one of the many knowledge resources NATSO produces in our quest to deliver solutions to help NATSO members make good business decisions.

Among other interesting findings, the McLane-NATSO Foundation Index found when comparing January – September, 2012 to January – September, 2011 average purchases per week per travel plaza and truckstop:

  • Other snacks (up 15%) and salty snacks (up 8%) continue to show strong gains versus 2011. Product placement and variety of products are critical to the success in these categories;
  • Cigarettes continue to dominate the mix representing 59% of total purchase dollars. While cigarette pack sales continued to decline, higher prices may be keeping the mix at a slightly higher level versus previous periods; and
  • The best opportunities to improve convenience product sales are in snacks, packaged beverages, hot dispensed beverages, deli/foodservice and automotive products.
